To the editor:
Only one area caused some of us in attendance for the Russian and Southeast Missouri State University women's volleyball game Sept. 11 to raise a question. Since an attendance turnout of 2,000 to 2,500 was expected, why were not high school players invited to attend at a discount, or free, admission? The added cost probably could have been underwritten easily by an area business.
It was a wonderful opportunity for prep school athletes to observe how important height, experience and skill are on a higher playing level.
On the more positive side the attitude and enthusiasm of the ticket sellers, ticket takers and others involved with the public was excellent. The Otahkians put on a spirited effort, with spurts of play showing ability to compete with Russia, in a losing effort.
Probably the highlight of the evening was the warm, generous and deserved round of applause given to the participating teams in appreciation of their performance upon conclusion of the contest. Especially, the Russian coaches and team seemed to receive the estimated 500 fans response very well.
Maybe the next time a talented volleyball team opposes the Otahkians plans shall include the high school players and coaches of Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois.
