On behalf of the entire board of directors of the Area Wide United Way, we are writing to thank the Southeast Missourian staff for its promotion of Random Acts of Kindness Week.

Although kindness abounds in our community year around, this special focus allows those well-intentioned do-gooders to follow through on their intentions. It also allows for the opportunity to acknowledge some of those individuals who do so much.

There seems to be an abundance of bad news to report these days. It was especially nice to pick up the newspaper and read so much good news about good people doing good things for others. Thank you for devoting so much of your newspaper to this good news.

The best news is that for every story you told, there are dozens more to be told. And the acts of kindness continued with neighbors helping neighbors pick up and clean up and our recent storm.

We plan to continue to encourage kind acts throughout the year at the United Way and hope anyone considering taking the leap into the wonderful world of volunteerism will give us a call to get hooked. It feels so good to put someone else's needed ahead of your own now and then.

We are a community taking care of its own -- as it should be.
