To the Editor:
Recently, the Missourian quoted President Clinton as saying: "When you change a country, now, you can't just pass a law and change it. You can't just write a bill and change it. You have to change the behavior of the whole country. People have to change their lives. So, we can't do that unless people feel a higher level of security."
Change behavior of the whole country? Greater security? Does anybody prefer freedom? Many governments have provided cradle-to-grave security. I prefer our limited government.
Perhaps a quotation of George Bernard Shaw, writer, playwright, and Socialist would be appropriate. He said: "We must get people to live on a higher plane." He was asked, "How about those who won't do this?" His reply: "Those we will have to eliminate in as kindly a manner as possible."
Utopians scare me tremendously.
