To the Editor:
Who are they? And who are the members of this group called The South Cape Development Group? These are the two questions that have been asked previously in Speakout and in the Letters To The Editor section.
The South Cape Development Group is an individual group of concerned citizens who are interested in promoting the enhancement of the south end of Cape Girardeau. We are not affiliated with Lady Luck Gaming Corporation, but we are in support of their proposal because we feel that the proposal they offer is in the best interest of the citizens of Cape Girardeau. There will be approximately one mile of riverfront enhancement in the south Cape area which will be a tremendous asset to the city and to the people of Cape Girardeau. Not only will the renewal of south Cape area take place, this proposal will generate 1,100+ jobs. We feel a strong need for the citizens of Cape Girardeau to know the true facts and realize that this may possibly be the last chance to update and clean up a blighted area. We feel that the south Cape site is the best site for handling the large amount of traffic with a minimal amount of inconvenience to the citizens of Cape Girardeau. Groups in the past have tried for years to clean up the south end area with no success. Lady Luck has proposed a concept of entertainment for both adults and children, not just a gaming establishment. Lady Luck will develop approximately 100 acres which will be completely accessible to the citizens of Cape Girardeau with a clear view of the river and also areas of entertainment and enjoyment for the whole family. This area will be made readily accessible to the public by the trolley bus system that will travel the downtown area and several selected routes. This trolley bus system will be operated by Lady Luck.
We feel as a group that neither gaming establishment should be able to proceed until funds are secured and bonded. Our main issue and purpose is for the citizens of Cape Girardeau. We ask the citizens of Cape Girardeau to respond by coming forward to the City Council with your opinions. We now have the chance to revitalize the south end of Cape Girardeau which was at one time a thriving area.
Let's not gamble with this opportunity.
