To the editor:
When my neighbors paint their home, add a room or landscape, I could have a variety of feelings. One is that I am envious of their progress and attractiveness. The second is that I am pleased, because I know their improvements mean a higher property value for my home and neighborhood. The third is that I am simply genuinely happy for their family, because I understand how much it means to them and how proud they are of their success.
On behalf of the Cape Girardeau School District, I would hope that the latter viewpoint describes our feeling toward the Jackson School District's proposed tax levy and bond issue. We do hope the Jackson schools are successful in their effort to improve the facilities for their children. We believe their success contributes to the success of the surrounding communities as well as to the individual children. There are always questions surrounding ballot issues. However, we believe our neighbors to be ethical, well-meaning and responsible for the common good of their children.
The sister communities of Jackson and Cape Girardeau share many common values and religious and economic interests. Our schools are often compared, and a friendly rivalry exists. However, we thinks this serves to enhance, rather than diminish, our common goal, which is the welfare of the children in both communities. Therefore, we wish the Jackson schools well in their effort on Aug. 8. Good neighbors appreciate and understand the benefit for one as the benefit for all and are happy for their accomplishments. Good luck to Jackson.
DAN STESKA, Superintendent
Cape Girardeau School District
Cape Girardeau
