LETTERS: SURGERY GIVES RELIEF FROM PAIN

I fell off a ladder in 1987, injuring my back. I entered the hospital and was released sometime later with a back brace. After wearing the back brace and seeing a doctor for several months, I was advised I should have back surgery. Nine months later, in July 1988, I had the surgery, which left me paralyzed from the waist down.

I have had some pain all these years. The past year the pain became so great I couldn't enjoy everyday life. I was greatly depressed along with the pain, and I began searching for help. I went from one doctor to another, with each giving me some medication. But the medication was not effective. Sometimes I wondered if anyone believed I was really in pain. I even went to a pain clinic and the pain center at St. Francis Medical Center, receiving more medication and shots. All the shots and medications gave me some relief but did not relieve the pain.

I had several appointments with Dr. Bernard Burns. He prescribed medication for the pain and ordered a stimulator for me. This helped but did not get rid of the pain. Dr. Burns ordered an MRI and, after reviewing the results, referred me to Dr. Joel Ray.

Dr. Ray listened to me with patience and discussed the case with my husband and myself. I saw him several times, and each time he took time to explain his evaluation. He dictated his evaluation while we were present, so we were well aware of his evaluation. He conferred with Dr. Burns, getting his input in my case. We were very comfortable with his help and evaluation of my case. Dr. Ray explained to us just what he thought could be done to relieve the pain. He wanted to get a team of doctors and a nurse together before surgery. I was interviewed by Dr. Jordan at St. Francis Rehabilitation Center. Susan Cole explained the stimulator to me and how it works.

Last October, Dr. Ray implanted a stimulator and a shunt in my back at St. Francis Medical Center. The nurses and staff were very helpful to me. This has greatly relieved my pain. I am so glad that I was referred to Dr. Ray and thankful for the results of the surgery. Since the surgery, I have been able to return to a daily routine free from pain.
