To the editor:
I read the recent article about state Sen. Al Spradling having been honored by the Missouri Senate for his service there.
I was fortunate enough to have been Senator Spradling's state representative for part of the time he was the president pro tem of the Senate.
I was a Republican representative of Cape Girardeau County (and a freshman) in 1961. But I quickly learned that no one was more respected in Jefferson City than Al Spradling. We were (and are) close friends, and he gave me plenty of great advice. We rode back and forth together to Jefferson City many times (he drove), and I would like to advise your readers that Spradling as their senator did a great job for them.
We are honored to have another Cape Girardean as president pro tem of the Missouri Senate, and I am sure Peter Kinder is going to follow Spradling's footsteps well. We are a lucky community to have able men represent us. May it always be so.
ROBERT HEMPERLEY
