On May 5, as the approaching storm drew nearer, approximately 1,000 people were ushered off soccer fields at two locations in Cape Girardeau. Seven games were in progress, and four other games were scheduled to begin shortly. People were dispatched to their vehicles and nearby shelters just moments before winds exceeding 60 mph hit the area.

No one was injured. No one was unduly frightened. A big thank you to the police department, the fire department and the recreation center staff.
