To the editor:
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of our community who have openly expressed their concern through flowers, telephone calls and letters regarding the police officers who were injured during a recent incident on Good Hope Street. I cannot tell our community how much its support has meant to the officer and their families.
I would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to the Rev. Johnny Thomas and the Rev. David Allen, our police chaplains, who spent many hours on the streets on Friday and Saturday evening helping us ensure the evening remained peaceful and calm. We are ever mindful these types of incidents are isolated and the good people living in our community are appreciative of our efforts to keep our streets safe and crime-free. We are also very fortunate to have the support of many area law enforcement agencies who responded with assistance of the highest caliber.
The two most seriously injured officers are doing well and are expected to return to duty in the near future. Despite these unfortunate incidents, the men and women of the Cape Girardeau Police Department remain undaunted in their determination to keep our community a safe place to live and work.
RICHARD L. HETZEL, Police Chief
Cape Girardeau Police Department
