To the editor:
Americans are too busy to vote? This is a headline worth laughing at. I have talked to a lot of people about voting. Since I was not intimidating them by holding a clipboard in my hand, I think I have probably got more truthful answers. I dont recall anyone ever telling me that they didnt have time. These are the answers I got. No. 1: There is no one worth voting for ... character assassination. No. 2: My vote doesn't count anyway ... voter fraud.
No. 3: I don't know anything about the issues ... who can read that stuff anyway.
No. 4: I don't know anything about the candidates ... except they can afford to put up posters all over town. No. 5: I forgot ... It wasn't an important election anyway. Recently I had a very nice gentleman come to my door to promote his new church. He was there to invite me. I am now ashamed of my answer. I told him I didn't have time. Now I would like to offer up a confession. I have the time. Time is not the issue. I gave him this lame excuse because it was easier than the real reason. The voting booths are open from early in the morning till late in the evening, and we have absentee ballots. Time is not the issue. Maybe it just sounds better.
