To the editor:
My enthusiasm mounted as I read of the desire, effort and possibility of getting Cape Girardeau recognized as an official Main Street Town. I eagerly await further information on plans to make this possible, which are proposed to get under way in January.
Under the expert supervision of Judith Ann Lang, I feel this fine program will be accomplished with the support of various civic and local groups and with private donations.
There are many requirements, however, to make this possible. I see little reason why Cape Girardeau cannot meet the 10 criteria of the Main Street program. The city always has been able to boast of good management. Kind people have always been generous contributors with monetary gifts. The loyalty and cooperation among merchants has been excellent.
Memories of Main Street years back hold endearing thoughts by many who will remain in our hearts for always. Over the recent Christmas holidays, a dear friend from Oak Harbor, Wash., who visited with me, expressed much joy in again visiting the downtown area where she was delighted to find the same warmth, hospitality and homelike atmosphere among all the merchants that always existed. What a wonderful compliment, and how true it is.
Thus, that is exactly what the downtown merchants continue to achieve and at what they have always been so successful. My wish is for them to grown even higher and their goals to be reached.
