To the editor:

Brightly colored bits of light flashed in sequence over the river. Gathered together to watch the patriotic display on the sunrise side of the city, a solidarity of citizens arose among us. No strangers existed on the courthouse hill. You knew you were embraced by neighbors and friends. We gathered by the river only to be entertained, but we came away with a sense of community. It was the river as much as the fireworks and music. The river water flows through our souls as much as it flows through our bodies tying us to itself and each other. Let us gather at the river more often to renew ourselves and our community.
