To the editor:

During the second weekend in February, the Missouri-Arkansas District of Kiwanis International held its annual midwinter conference at Drury Lodge in Cape Girardeau. This conference brought 265 visitors to our city, some having never been here before and others who were quick to remind us that they were here for this same conference at the same motel during the Blizzard of '79. We all remember that extended weekend, and it was our good neighbors at the National Guard who eventually dug us out.

We felt that everything went very well at this conference, and this was confirmed by a letter we just received from the Missouri-Arkansas governor, Velma Wachter. She writes, "From arrival to departure, every detail was well-planned. The location was excellent, staff at the motel were excellent and the food was outstanding. Our trip to Port Cape Girardeau was an outstanding event, and the food was excellent as well."

Governor Velma gave our club an A-plus for what she thought was an outstanding job in hosting this conference, but it was not our efforts alone that captured this rating. As she mentioned, it was the wonderful staff at Drury Lodge who were so accommodating, Jane Stodghill's interesting presentation on quilts and the history of quilting, an afternoon tour of the Glenn House and Old St. Vincent's Church and an entertaining address to the group at its all-conference dinner by Mike Shain of KFVS-TV.

We felt a real sense of community with those who were involved locally, and we would like to share this A-plus rating with them.
