I would like to take a moment to thank the residents of Cape Girardeau County for once again making the Cancer Gala a huge success for the American Cancer Society. Because of the generosity of the donors, attendees and sponsors, the gala netted a record $53,000.

The success of the Cancer Gala will assure that the American Cancer Society will continue its fight against cancer through research, prevention, education and patient services. It is very obvious that the residents of Cape Girardeau County are very active in the battle against this killer.

I also want to thank the Southeast Missourian and KZIM for continually giving priority to the fight against cancer. A huge thank you also goes out to all committee chairs and volunteers who made the evening such a success. And to my event co-chairs, Rachel Beam and Rita Crain, you amaze me.

I moved to Cape Girardeau in 1990 to attend Southeast Missouri State University. And it is because of the caring residents like those that I have met through the American Cancer Society that eight years later I am proud to call Cape Girardeau my home.
