To the editor:
In November 1996 I was elected to my 19th consecutive term as a state representative from my home district in Southeast Missouri by a substantial majority. Beginning on Election Day and continuing thereafter, an official of the Republican Party, David Barklage, assisted by Congresswoman Jo Ann Emerson and Republican House candidate Lanie Black, charged that I won the election by buying votes. These blatantly false and malicious accusations were made regularly to the press throughout the Southeast Missouri region and state.
I won the election fairly and squarely. I have repeatedly stated, privately and publicly to all authorities who interviewed me, including state and federal officials, my campaign was conducted in accordance with all applicable state and federal laws and all ethical standards.
My family and I have been abused and defamed by the actions, accusations and conduct of certain Republicans who initiated this attack on me in furtherance of their own political agenda.
I am pleased to not the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri, Edward L. Dowd Jr., after a thorough investigation by the appropriate officials, has reached the same conclusions. According to Mr. Dowd's press release, the case has been closed.
To my friends and supporters who stood by me, my sincere thanks.
STATE REP. GENE COPELAND
161st District
New Madrid
