To the editor:

On behalf of the city of Jonesboro and the local committee working in conjunction with the C-SPAN network, we would like to extend our thanks to the community, local agencies and visitors who took time from their schedules to attend the reenactments of the Lincoln-Douglas debates.

On Sept. 17 our small community had approximately 3,000 people attend this historical event. Without the overwhelming response from countless people who volunteered their time and talent, none of this could have been made possible.

As a result of this event, the debates are being saved and archived at Purdue University in Lafayette, Ind. as a teaching tool for future generations. It has been gratifying for all those involved to know that we had the opportunity to participate in the remaking of history. It is our hope that we offered some insight into this particular era of this great nation.

Again to our local friends and neighbors we offer our thanks for helping to make this a success. And to our visitors we offer a warm welcome to again visit our area.

JOHN L. GARDNER, Mayor

Jonesboro, Ill.
