If you haven't started Christmas shopping, you likely will in the coming weeks. It's a festive time of year. Decorations. Gift giving. Gatherings with family and friends. The holidays are a time of joy.

While many of us will enjoy the coming weeks, it's important not to forget about animals -- including those in area shelters.

The picture on the front page of Wednesday's paper was precious. Two Labrador mix puppies were playing with a ball at the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri.

The shelter recently started a kennel enrichment program to help ease the stress of the animals. Classical music is played to help calm the animals. Area churches and groups donate toys. Different games provide exercise. Cats have toys with feathers hanging on their kennels for them to brush up against.

The shelter started implementing these ideas after staff attended a kennel enrichment course this year in Nashville, Tenn. The concept is a good one, and based on the photos it's clear the animals are enjoying the activities.

While these types of efforts are important, the cause remains. The shelter is on pace to take in as many animals as in 2012, about 3,378.

While about 60 percent of animals are adopted or sent to another shelter, others are euthanized.

There are ways that people can help the animals, particularly during this time of year.

Volunteers through the Holiday Helpers program help care for the animals and give them extra attention. The Humane Society also appreciates donations -- toys, supplies or monetary support. For more information, call 334-5837.

Many animals could use a forever home with a loving owner. Maybe this is the time for you to adopt one.

Any support you can provide is appreciated.
