Some of the most overlooked cops walk with four legs.
Police dogs serve the community. A recent story in the Southeast Missourian highlighted that Cape Girardeau is fortunate enough to have two police dogs, both German shepherds.
These amazing dogs help in many different ways, from helping sniff out drugs to subduing fleeing suspects to serving as backup.
The dogs take a tremendous amount of training and resources. Several smaller communities can't afford K-9 units, but they can call and request services from departments that do.
In this area, Perry County, Perryville, Jackson, Bollinger County, Cape Girardeau and Ste. Genevieve have K-9 units.
A special thank you goes out to the officers who work with the police dogs and to all of those who help train them.
