Jackson officials have begun the process of updating the city's comprehensive plan. The plan is a tool that helps guide decisions regarding future development.

Like most good plans and budgets, these documents are based on expectations and good intentions. They are not set in stone, and they must be flexible enough to accommodate unexpected or unanticipated shifts.

For example, the current Jackson plan anticipated more development along Highway 25 to the south, but the areas along Highways 34/72 to the west had more activity than expected.

Jackson has enjoyed steady growth in recent years. Some of this expansion has slowed this year because of the economy. But city officials expect the city to become a magnet for business and residential development when the current recession ends. And they want to be prepared.

Public input into comprehensive plans is vital, and Jackson residents are encouraged to participate in any or all of the several public hearings the city will hold as part of the update.

The first of these hearings is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday at city hall. Here is a good way to learn more about the city's goals and concerns -- and have a say in what direction the city will be going.
