To the editor:I would like to thank Jackson Planning and Zoning Commission members and Janet Sanders for work pertaining to the I-55/East Main Street area, but I believe someone has missed the point in suggesting we make rules for development similar to those of Chesterfield, Mo.
Chesterfield is a thriving shopping area in affluent West St. Louis County of thousands of highly educated residents with the finest specialty shops, restaurants and offices. Chesterfield is not dependent on interstate traffic for sales or income.
What we have at I-55/East Main Street is quite different. We will be opening an interchange in a sparsely populated area with great potential. Go less on demands such as 6-foot signs, stone fronts and two maple trees and a red rose bush for each 10 parking spots.
I would encourage businesses to locate in Jackson. Stress good architecture and beautification where possible without large extra expense to the businesses.
If we follow through with the Chesterfield scene, I am afraid we will be standing in the dark or under a lone streetlight looking at all the glitter on the other side of the intersection.
Location and visibility are why businesses gravitate to intersections. Travelers are looking for the golden arches, the Wal-Mart logo and motel signs they can spot before they get to an intersection.
Jackson can go with 6-foot signs no one can see, but I am sure travelers will see the lit signs on the east side that, thanks to Jackson, will be in Cape Girardeau.
DONALD KUNTZE, Jackson
