During the last couple of months, I have been very impressed by two young people of Jackson who have gone beyond their everyday lives to excel in their endeavors. Their stories have been written in the press and shown on TV, but I wanted to say a few additional words of how proud I am of these Jackson citizens.
Jill Rushin, a Jackson High School and University of Missouri graduate, competed in the U.S. Olympic Trials for track and field this summer. The trials determined who would represent the United States in the Olympic Games in Brazil this month. Jill did not qualify for one of the only three spots in the shot put event. But just to compete in the Olympic Trials as one of the 24 competitors from across the United States is amazing.
The dedication of any individual to pursue a sport at this level, like Jill, is inspiring. Jill won three state titles while at Jackson High School in the discus and shot put events and excelled at the university level as well.
But Jill is not just about track and field. Having had the chance to meet Jill, I have been most impressed with her faith in God and how she has made this a big part of her life in sports. Jill has been involved in Athletes in Action, a student-athlete ministry group, as an intern and teaches athletes about the personal relationships they can have with God.
Jill is daughter of Richard and Debby Rushin.
Cameron Tyler's endeavors have shown in his leadership activities and oratory skills. Tyler won first place in the Optimist International Oratorical World Championship in St. Louis.
His personally written and delivered speech, "How My Best Brings Out the Best in Others," was awarded a $20,000 scholarship. The other contestants were from many states and around the world. Cameron enjoyed meeting and interacting with other contestants and learning how their different cultures affected their lives and attitudes.
I have been able to get to know Cameron in his role as president of the Interact Club. The Interact Club, a youth club at Jackson High School, is sponsored by the Jackson Rotary. Cameron's energy and enthusiasm is impressive and seemingly unlimited.
Cameron is also active in the FBLA, school choir and band, and teaches part time in the After-School Kids Club. He has performed at The Muny in St. Louis and as a cast member of two shows at the River Campus.
Cameron is the son of Gary and Gloria Tyler.
My personal opportunities to travel and live in different parts of the world has shown to me what Cameron experienced in St. Louis and Jill in her Athletes in Action. Different cultures and backgrounds make us unique, but at the same time we can come together, interchange ideas and compete, whether it is an oratorical contest or the Olympic Games.
They say if you want something done find a busy person. These two young citizens of Jackson show that busy lives can be fulfilling and very rewarding. I congratulate them and their families on their accomplishments and wish them well in their future endeavors. I am sure they will continue to make Jackson proud.
Dwain Hahs is the mayor of Jackson.
