To the editor:
Many years ago when I was playing basketball at May Greene Elementary School against Franklin Elementary School, I could not help but notice Franklin's coach. Little did I realize this man would be a big factor in my life.
Our true relationship did not start until I became a teacher and coach in the Cape Girardeau School District. Jack Russell -- or Pug, as many of his friends called him -- never hesitated to give me assistance. He was always very opinionated about what he thought was right or wrong and never hesitated to let me know.
In September 1994, my father passed away. Although no one can ever replace my father, Russell became a father image for me. Many times he was there for assistance and guidance. He would always listen and then give his thoughts on what should be done. He became very loyal and supportive to me as I taught and served as athletic director.
Many times in our conversations, we would have serious discussions about our faith in God. Russell was a devout Catholic, and I was of the Pentecostal faith. We would have heated debates on whose interpretation of the Bible was correct. But I truly believe our goals were the same, and we will see each other again.
I am sure I will not be the only one to miss Jack Russell. He touched a number of lives as coach, teacher, shoe salesman and driver's education instructor.
