It is a time of great anticipation and some apprehension. Some graduates will go on for further studies, while most will head into the job market. It is the moment of truth. Are graduates prepared? Will chosen fields prove satisfying? Can jobs be found quickly?
Bekki Cook, a Cape Girardeau resident who serves as Missouri's secretary of state, will give the graduates their send-off. She is a good role model for these men and women, demonstrating that hard work and intelligence can pay off. Cook has turned around the secretary of state's office, rebuilding trust and confidence.
A native of Jackson, she attended Southeast Missouri State University. She was a lawyer for many years in Cape Girardeau before her selection as secretary of state last December.
No doubt she will spark graduate dream machines: Set your sights high and all things may be possible. Cook is living proof of that.
The city will be bustling with family and friends ready to congratulate those who have achieved the distinction of a college degree. Ceremonies begin at 2 p.m. at the Show Me Center. Today is a day of celebration and accomplishment on the university campus. Next week, the seniors can worry about finals.
