The Missouri Conservation Department will spend $75,000 for improvements to Lake Girardeau largely because of complaints raised by local fishermen.

The Conservation Commission recently approved the expenditure to install two new handicapped-accessible, precast concrete privies; construct a pavilion and a new trail; renovate the existing fishing dock and build another fishing dock; and install new barbecue grills.

It also asked conservation staff to study whether putting muskies in the lake has hurt the bass, bluegill and crappie populations. Meanwhile, no more muskies will be put in the lake near Crump.

It is too bad the lake has been allowed to run down, but it is nice to see a state agency listen to complaints and do something to improve the situation at Lake Girardeau.
