Imagine this. You have devoted many years of hard work to the same company, have climbed the ladder and enjoyed success. One day, you are laid off. No matter, you think. With your skills and experience, you'll easily find another job. Then reality sinks in. Jobs are scarce. Accepting a low-paying job will only consume the time you could be pursuing a job that will actually earn enough to pay your mortgage. You cut back everywhere you can. Still, you fall behind on your bills. Eventually, the bank forecloses, and you and your family are faced with the unimaginable reality of homelessness, and a downward spiral begins.
Some homeless are in their plight simply because of poor lifestyle choices. Many are not. Some suffer from addiction or mental illness and can't afford or don't want treatment. In the reality of today's economy, this could happen to anyone. There's little hope of finding a job or keeping a job without a place to sleep, bathe and provide a mailing address. A place to spend one night is a comfort but of little benefit.
Everyone, especially children, deserves a safe place to sleep out of the elements. Turning your head does not eliminate the problem (they're already here) but only scatters it to make it conveniently less noticeable. Before you shun the thought of the homeless spoiling our downtown, keep in mind that it could happen to someone you love, or even to you.
