Helping Moore

Last month a tornado killed 24 people in Moore, Okla., ravaging more than 1,200 homes. The devastation is heartbreaking. But in the weeks since the destruction, we've seen countless examples of generosity. Strangers helping those affected -- donating monetarily and through volunteer efforts.

In Sunday's Southeast Missourian there was a story about a student group who played a role in the relief efforts. An outdoor adventure class led by Dr. Tom Holman spent some time in Colorado in late May.

The group participated in many exciting activities, including rock-climbing and white water rafting. On their return trip, they took a different route bringing them through Oklahoma. Seeing the devastation, they decided to prolong the trip by one day and offer assistance.

After connecting with a local church and Operation Blessing, the group delivered supplies, food and water to those affected as well as volunteers. Holman told the Southeast Missourian this was a humbling experience for the students.

"I think my students were taken aback by what they saw, but they were ready to just dive in and put on the servant's heart and do the hard work that needed to be done to help these folks out," Holman said.

We applaud this group and the many other local volunteers and organizations who have helped provide meaningful relief to those who have lost so much.

There's another opportunity this week to support the ongoing efforts in Oklahoma. Several musicians will entertain shoppers from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday outside Schnucks Supermarket in Cape Girardeau. Called "Music for Moore," organizers are encouraging a $1 donation to the American Red Cross.

The musicians scheduled to perform include: Dave Gerlock, Fara McSpadden, Bob Camp, Stan Denninger and Shannon Meyer, Bruce Zimmerman, Don Greenwood, Mike Barnett and Dennis Gurley, Doug E. Rees, Big Larry Williams, Chris Moore, Lindsey Bowerman and Les Lindy.

We pray the people in Oklahoma will experience peace from Almighty God and that kind volunteers will continue their support of the community.
