Whenever folks get involved in their community, the motivation generally is to make where they live a better place. And there is a great deal of satisfaction that comes from making the effort to help others by sharing skills, time and effort.
Most volunteers don't contribute all those hours for the recognition, but it is certainly appropriate and worthwhile to honor the many individuals and organizations who make volunteer organizations effective.
Both the Southeast Missouri chapter of the American Red Cross and the Cape Girardeau County unit of the American Cancer Society recently honored their volunteers and others who have helped during the past year.
Looking down the lists of individuals and organizations reveals an honor roll of caring neighbors and friends who work diligently on behalf of worthwhile causes like blood donations, disaster relief and the ongoing battle against cancer.
Hats off to all the volunteers who selflessly give.
