Southeast Missouri State University has landed another major plum to go with the forthcoming River Campus and the great turnaround story of the month: the 2-1 football Indians.
The latest honor will be the hosting of the first in a trio of debates in Missouri's hot gubernatorial campaign. That campaign, cited by many national sources as the key governor's race in the nation this year, pits the Democratic nominee, State Treasurer Bob Holden, against the Republican nominee, U.S. Rep. Jim Talent of St. Louis.
The debate is scheduled for 7 p.m. next Monday at Academic Hall Auditorium. The debate is expected to last an hour.
Other debates will be in Kansas City Oct. 10 and in Springfield Oct. 15. The debate here is open to the public and will be simultaneously broadcast on the university's radio station, KRCU, and on KFVS-TV. Tapes will be made available to other CBS affiliates in Missouri and for rebroadcast later on C-SPAN.
The two candidates appeared jointly before the Missouri Press Association earlier this month in St. Louis, but that format didn't allow for much give-and-take. We look forward to hearing both candidates at the University and congratulate university officials for arranging this service to all.
