Gamers, rejoice. This weekend is just for you. Brewfest 2008 will commence at 2 p.m. Friday and continue through 6 p.m. Sunday in the River View Room at Buckner Brewing Co.

Back in April, I talked to a serious attendant to the Cape Comic Con during the Warhammer 40K Apocalypse game. One Mr. Larry Snodgrass took a few minutes from fictional world domination to talk to me about the games and the Comic Con.

He also told me about this weekendlong gaming convention he puts on in the fall. Brewfest 2008, he called it. Well, it's finally here. More than 50 people have already registered and organizers expect 10 to 20 to show up late to play role-playing games, tabletop miniatures games and Magic: The Gathering card tournaments all weekend long.

My experiences with Dungeons and Dragons and other RPG games basically stops at my youthful fascination with my brother's 20-sided dice and glancing at the cartoon wizards and creatures on the book on his dresser when I took said dice.

But Snodgrass has been playing for nearly 30 years. And Brewfest — which sadly has nothing to do with beer except that it's held in the top room of a brewery — has been an organized weekend event for five years, the last four of them being at Buckner's.

He was busy painting scenery for the Warhammer 40K Apocalypse game. They create whole landscapes on boards where people gather to send their troops here and there and conquer and rescue. Snodgrass took a few minutes to explain to a novice like me about the different games, players, games within games, etc.

I still don't understand. However, I am a visual person, so maybe a phone conversation wasn't the best teaching tool for me. He promised that with the new rules for D&D, any one could sit down, make a character and be fighting and ruling and playing (almost) like the best of them.

We'll see. To test your skills, learn some new ones or just watch the captivating games that make up Brewfest 2008, join the gamers from noon to 11 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to midnight-ish Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. It's free to watch, $25 to play for the weekend, $20 for Saturday or $10 for each Friday and Saturday.

Gaming starts an hour after doors open, except Friday when they start two hours after. The gamers gotta leave time at the beginning for socializing before they conquer the worlds.
