Now that the snow has finally melted and we've experienced a waft of warmth, our minds think of spring things.

And that includes fresh vegetables.

The Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department will plant its newest community garden at the Shawnee Park Center this spring.

The garden will be one of four community gardens in the city. The others are on Fountain Street, North Main Street and Washington Avenue near Washing Park, according to a story reported by Samantha Rinehart.

The effort, according to the story, is funded by city revenue generated by Isle Casino Cape Girardeau.

The garden primarily will grow vegetable crops as well as herbs.

The food that is grown will be distributed to families and neighbors, which will help foster a sense of pride in the work. More information is available by calling the city's parks and recreation department.

Seeds also are being planted for this year's Cape Riverfront Market.

On Thursday, the market will hold a vendor meeting. Vendors must be within 100 miles and produce their own goods. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the basement of First Presbyterian Church at 235 Broadway.

We're counting the days until our community gardens and farmers markets bear fruit.
