After months of experimentation, hours of specimen collection and days of research, hundreds of nervous exhibitors answered tough questions about their projects during judging for the annual Southeast Missouri Regional Science Fair.
The fair competition was intense this year, with the largest number of students ever entering exhibits in the contest. More than 177 exhibits showcased the work of nearly 240 students from the region.
The show was held at the Show Me Center, a facility that served nicely as the place to display the works. The Southeast Missourian is proud to have been the fair's sponsor for many years.
Inside the building, the range of science projects varied from botany to biochemistry. The competition, open to both junior high and high school students, continually produces top-quality projects and has throughout its 48-year history.
Two high school students won top honors for their projects and advanced to the International Science and Engineering Fair. They received all-expense paid trips to attend this summer's fair in Portland, Ore.
Science educators, parents and community members have much to be proud of when you consider all the effort these students put forth. Their research could one day serve to better our lives and their endeavors should be supported.
