To the editor:In regard to the Nov. 28 article about Cape Girardeau County's new half-cent tax in Tuesday: How can there be any question about the sheriff's department getting its money on Jan. 1, which was promised them by the passage of the new sales tax? These men and women put their lives on the line for every one of us each time they go to work -- even for Presiding Commissioner Gerald Jones, who was so adamant against giving the money to the sheriff's department in January. Have we all been fooled when he declares, "There is not going to be that much money"? Most certainly the special road district needs money, but to expect that to take precedence over the livelihood of the sheriff's department, which is underpaid and understaffed, is more than I can fathom.
