If the legislature approves Medicaid cuts, Missouri's eligibility level for working parents will drop to 47th nationally. A family of three could earn no more than $4,800 annually to receive Medicaid. Even Tennessee, with massive proposed Medicaid cuts, will continue to cover those making less than 95 percent of the federal poverty level. In Missouri, the eligibility would be lowered to 30 percent of poverty.

Your March 20 editorial, "Medicaid realities," states Missouri must "spend no more than is taken in." The problem is that we don't take in enough revenue. Missouri has very low taxes, including a lower corporate tax rate than 30 other states, a lower sales tax than 39 other states and a lower cigarette tax than 47 other states. With modest adjustments, Missouri could fund health care for those in need.

Southeast Missouri will suffer most if Medicaid cuts are approved. The region has the highest percentage of resident in any region of Missouri who rely on Medicaid as their only access to health care. The cuts will also result in 10,000 Missouri jobs lost, many in Southeast Missouri.

Medicaid cuts are not the answer. Keeping people healthy and employed are wise investments for Missouri.
