Dr. Frank Nickell rarely seeks the spotlight, but through his knowledge and expertise, along with a speaking voice that would be the envy of any network broadcaster, the history professor is frequently the center of attention. Nickell, who has been on the Southeast Missouri State University faculty 40 years and also serves as the director of the Center for Regional History, was the recipient of the Provost's Research, Instructional and Development for Excellence (PRIDE) award at Southeast Missouri State University's winter commencement.

Nickell tells riveting stories of our area. In addition to speaking, he also is the host of radio programs and the author of newspaper columns that illuminate the achievements of individuals whose beginnings match our own, with deep roots in Southeast Missouri.

Part of the basis for giving the PRIDE award is how the honoree exemplifies the teacher/scholar model. Nickell's contributions to education and his devotion to furthering the knowledge of our history mirror his mother's philosophy. As he related in his acceptance remarks, Nickell quoted his mother: "Once you're educated, no one can take that away from you."

Nickell's accomplishments certainly are equal to that test, and we are all richer in the knowledge he has shared.
