Because of the current financial distress the country and state are going through, many teachers are going to lose their jobs. Teaching is not the only occupation that is facing these hardships. There is one occupation, however, that is immune to downsizing or cutbacks in pay. This occupation is politician. I feel it is time to change this.
Missouri has 163 state representatives for 6 million citizens. Some of the most populated states in America have fewer representatives than we do. California has 80 representatives and 36 million people. Other states with higher populations that have fewer state representatives are Florida, Illinois, Michigan and Ohio.
I propose reducing our number of state representatives to 99. Tennessee has a comparable population to Missouri and has 99 representatives. Nebraska does not even have a House of Representatives. With redistricting coming up next year, this is the perfect time to get this done.
State representatives currently make $31,351.44 per year. If 64 of those jobs are cut, it would mean an annual savings of over $2 million. That money could go to education, law enforcement, improving roads or balance the budget.
Is there a state representative out there who is brave enough to champion this cause?
If you agree with me, please call one of the following state representatives: District 156, Shelly Keeney, 573-751-5912; District 157, Scott Lipke, 573-751-6662; District 158, Clint Tracy, 573-751-1443; District 159, Billy Pat Wright, 573-751-1494.
