Many in our community have been blessed with wonderful families and spouses. Unfortunately, others have faced the horror of domestic violence. For these individuals, the Safe House for Women in Cape Girardeau is one of the first places they turn to for help.
In an effort to help raise funds for the organization, the second annual Vintage Now Fashion Show was held Tuesday evening at The Venue in Cape Girardeau. Thirty-five adults and 27 children hit the runway as models in front of a crowd of 725. Attendance this year more than doubled last year's crowd of 300.
Safe House for Women executive director Linda Garner said last year's event, a three-month planning effort, was a spontaneous idea that raised $3,500. This year the organization sought various fundraising opportunities -- sponsorships, individual tickets and a silent auction -- and $30,000 was raised.
Special thanks to all those who attended and helped make the event possible, including Pastimes Antiques, which provided the vintage outfits that were modeled. Deb Maevers, owner of Pastimes Antiques, also deserves recognition for her leadership in this event.
Hosting the annual fashion show is no small feat. Local volunteers spend countless hours organizing and making sure the event goes off without a hitch. Tuesday night these efforts made for an outstanding event and successful fundraiser for an important local organization.
