Educators seek best ways to promote learning

Southeast Missouri is home to so many exciting advances in education.

And as one learns of them, one discovers that school is a very different place than even a few decades ago.

The latest development: Jackson School District this year implemented the first curriculum changes in its vertical team-education philosophy.

It's an area Cape Girardeau School District dipped its toe into several years ago and expands on every year, assistant superintendent Cathy Evans said.

The idea is to build on a student's knowledge from one year to another instead of having gaps in certain subjects and areas. At the same time, it's a horizontal philosophy, allowing teachers in English, math, social studies, science and other subjects to teach lessons that complement each other.

It sounds like a basic concept, but it takes a lot of work. Teachers and administrators from both districts in all grades meet to be sure their lesson plans are in line with the program.

We can be grateful for educators who take the time to do what's best for our children. But since the program can be more challenging -- and there are higher expectations of students -- parents will have to do their part to keep their offspring motivated.
