Discovery Playhouse

Friday morning a ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce was held for Kim's Secret Water Garden, the newest feature at the Discovery Playhouse in Cape Girardeau.

Kim's Secret Water Garden, named in honor of the late Kim Kurka McDowell and designed lovingly by her husband, Terry McDowell, is an interactive water play exhibit at the museum modeled after similar exhibits at St. Louis' Magic House, Chicago Children's Museum and the Boston Children's Museum.

The interactive water play area is designed for infants through elementary age children, providing four tables that are both fun and encourage analytical thought. Another plus for the exhibit is its water filtration system which constantly pumps new water for a clean and sanitary play environment.

Since opening one year ago this month, Discovery Playhouse has had more than 25,000 guests visit the facility. And while the children are having fun with the exhibits, they are also learning about banking, shopping and dentistry among other things.

This Saturday the Discovery Playhouse will host its second annual FUNdraiser. Tickets for this adult only event are $55 a piece -- $100 for two or $350 for eight. Event proceeds are used to support the facility's operations for the year. Guests will have an opportunity to see the newly renovated second floor space in addition to the new water exhibit among others.
