Developing leaders

Learning key concepts in math, science and language arts are vital to a solid educational foundation. But also important, and a confirmed need according to area businesses, is that students develop soft skills and a strong work ethic -- important leadership skills.

Thanks in part to the Southeast Missouri P-20 Council and various grants, students in Scott City and Meadow Heights are developing these skills through a program called the Leader in Me. The program was adapted from the book "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People," and among the benefits it highlights: decreased disciplinary problems, character and leadership development, greater academic achievement and a higher level of engagement among teachers and parents.

Both school districts implementing the program are seeing positive results. Meadow Heights Elementary principal Donna Bristow said staff members at the school now hear students use common phrases from the program. Scott City Middle School principal Mike Umfleet said thanks in part to the program, the environment at the school has improved, students are more engaged and attendance is up.

While the P-20 Council hopes more schools in the area start using the program, training costs do exist and grant funds are running low. As a way to expand the program to other schools at no expense, the company has agreed to allow certified school staff to train individuals at other schools and districts. Meadow Heights and Scott City plan to train staff in two other school districts over the next six years.

Hats off the P-20 Council and the school districts for implementing the Leader in Me program. We hope this is another step that will better prepare our students as they move forward in their careers and educational aspirations.
