Crisp Museum will celebrate Benton's work

The River Campus in Cape Girardeau regularly hosts dazzling theatrical and musical performances. But another area of the facility worth mentioning is Crisp Musuem, which features art and history galleries along with a video that highlights the heritage of Southeast Missouri.

Starting today, the museum will offer a special treat. The artwork of Thomas Hart Benton will be on display. The exhibit will remain until Jan. 24, 2016.

Many will know Benton by his murals, one of which is in the Missouri State Capitol building. Benton was born in Neosho, Missouri, and spent much time growing up in the nation's capital, his father a member of Congress. But Benton's interest was in art, and his studies led him to develop the talent.

There will be several events this month connected to Benton's work and history during his time; all events are free of charge. Here is a look at the events:

• 4 to 8 p.m. Friday: Opening reception for the exhibit.
• 6 p.m. today: Curator talk by Joan Stack of the State Historical Society of Missouri.
• 1 to 4 p.m. Nov. 14: Thomas Hart Benton Family Day. Activities include hands-on experience using Benton's style and guided tours. Gary Beahan will portray Benton.
• 6 p.m. Nov. 19: Historian Frank Nickell will talk about Missouri and regional history during Benton's life.
• 7 p.m. Nov. 20: A musical performance by Robert Fruehwald to include works by Missouri composers connected to the exhibit theme.
