To the editor:
I have been both disturbed and disappointed by coverage of the death of Rachel Skaggs, the teen mother in Dutchtown. KFVS-12 and the Southeast Missourian have done a disservice to the families and close friends of Rachel.
I recognize insensitivity and sensationalized reporting when I see it. To report such a tragedy carries with it a heavy responsibility, one that does not supersede compassion.
The coverage should never have included "neighbors recall hearing screams." The family bears enough grief without reading or hearing the specifics.
To report the poor living conditions -- "property littered with junk cars ... neighbors complained it was an eyesore" -- surely carried with it no goal other than selling newspapers or booting ratings. Do we not consider the feelings of the families and friends when reporting a tragedy? I don't remember hearing such graphic details about victims from the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
An apology is not going to help. The pain has been intensified for the survivors, including former teachers such as myself, for years to come. I will remember the quiet, respectful young lady in my class who tried to do the best she could.
