It's always a worry when a good friend becomes ill. But when that individual is a city councilman known and respected by many, the concern increases.
Melvin Gateley underwent six hours of open-heart surgery Wednesday. Gateley, who is in his early 70s, had a quadruple bypass as well as replacement of the mitral valve in his heart.
His wife, Ella, reports that the operation went well and that Melvin is just doing wonderfully. That is welcome news.
Gateley has been a real credit in this community. This longtime educator served as principal of L.J. Schultz School for 21 years before his retirement in 1986. But retirement didn't slow him down.
He has long been active in community affairs -- at his church, clubs, Boy Scouts, Vision 2000, the city's Bicentennial Commission and many more. He was first elected to the City Council in 1992, and he has worked hard to make this city a better place.
Get well cards can be sent to Gateley's home at 1725 Brookwood, Cape Girardeau, Mo. 63701.
Our prayers are with him for a quick recovery.
