Corvettes made for fun attraction in Cape's downtown

It was an impressive sight on Tuesday as a large group of Corvettes made its way to downtown Cape Girardeau.

Hundreds of the popular sports cars joined the Corvette Caravan, and local enthusiasts filled the downtown area to get a look. The group was traveling to the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Not only was this a treat for those of us who live in the area, but the participants told the Southeast Missourian how much they enjoyed stopping on the banks of the Mississippi River.

Ray and Debbie Gastelum were part of the group. The couple is from Pasadena, California, and they spoke highly of Cape Girardeau, noting it was their favorite stop to that point.

"We've never been farther than Las Vegas, so this has been very cool, seeing the Mississippi and everything," Ray Gastelum said. "I mean it's the trip of our lifetime. We grew up wanting to do this ... and for the town to put on what they did tonight, on a Tuesday night, it was very impressive."

Special thanks to the local organizers and sponsors who helped make this possible. Local events like the Corvette Caravan bring out the community for good family fun and can spur economic activity.

A similar event is happening in September. The Motorcycle Cannonball Run will make its way to Cape Girardeau on Sept. 9.

The group is traveling from Daytona Beach, Florida, to Tacoma, Washington. They will spend the night in Cape, and about 100 antique rally motorcycles will be available to for view on Spanish Street between Themis and Merriwether streets. The group will make it to town about 4 p.m.
