It's exciting to see students apply concepts from the classroom to extracurricular projects.

On Tuesday more than 400 students had an opportunity to do so at the 59th Annual Southeast Missouri Regional Science Fair.

The fair was held at the Show Me Center, and about 32 area high schools participated.

Schools who planned to participate included Advance R-IV, Delta R-V Junior High, Delta R-V High School, Dexter Senior High School, Immaculate Conception-Jackson, Jackson Junior High, Jackson High School, Leopold R-III, Malden R-I, Malden High School, Neelyville R-IV, Nell Holcomb R-IV-Cape Girardeau, North Pemiscot, Oak Ridge R-VI Junior High, Oak Ridge High School, Richland R-I Junior High, Richland High School, Risco R-II High School, Saxony Lutheran High School, Scott City Middle School, South Pemiscot Junior High, South Pemiscot High School, St. Ambrose School-Chaffee, St. Denis-Benton, St. Joseph School-Scott City, St. Vincent de Paul-Cape Girardeau, St. Vincent-Perryville, Ste. Genevieve Middle School, T.S. Hill Middle School-Dexter, Trinity Lutheran-Cape Girardeau, Twin Rivers-Fisk and Twin Rivers-Qulin.

Areas of scientific study included behavioral and social sciences, biochemistry, botany, chemistry, earth and space science, engineering, environmental science, math and computer science, medicine and health, microbiology, physics and zoology, according to a news release.

Participation in science fairs may not be a requirement for students, but it's a good opportunity to learn through each student's own exhibit and by looking at others.
