Here are excerpts from a letter I sent to the Rev. Jim Swift, provincial superior of the Vincentians:

I read in the paper about the seminary getting involved in a golf course, which will lease 200 acres of the Vincentian property. I have heard that the Perryville Progress Corporation is waiting for a loan guarantee from the USDA Rural Development Community Facilities Program.

The Perryville County Club voted against this project several months ago. Why are the Vincentians getting involved again? This project will put the Perryville Country Club out of business. Many of the PCC golfers will lose their money because of this new course.

If you know anything about golf courses, you would know that there are not enough people in Perryville to support a nine-hole course and an 18-hole course. With golf courses at Ste. Genevieve, Jackson and Chester, who will be visiting our town to play golf?

And this is what the federal government has gotten into. When are we going to stop asking the federal government for money? Why should the government get involved in guaranteeing the funds for this new course?

I am concerned about this because of the enormous federal debt we have. Are the Vincentians that hard up for money that they want to contribute to this project? I would think not.
