Closing TeAta is loss for rural Scouts

To the editor:

Last week my daughter attended the Girl Scouts' Camp TeAta outside Marble Hill for the last time. The local council voted to close this camp, which has been in operation for 50 years. It was a close-to-home option for the rural Scouts of Rolling Hills with overnight camps, day camps and cookouts.

Will the Otahki Council now bus all these county girls to its other camps? Will the girls have to pay transportation now just to go to day camp? Looks like the very important dollar governs this decision, dollars that someone wants to use at Camp Sacajawea or Camp Cherokee Ridge.

Who loses? The girls of the Rolling Hills Scouts. But let's remember, we are concerned about Scouts. Aren't we?

I believe the main benefit will go to the Scouts of Cape Girardeau and Jackson. This will significantly lessen the interest and attendance of our girls whose parents will no longer have this convenience. What a way to tell the girls of Bollinger County, "Sorry, you just don't matter."
