When it comes to volunteers, city government is an example of how important they are. Consider these statistics:
-- There are some 20 advisory boards and committees in Cape Girardeau's city government.
-- More than 150 people give up their time and contribute their ideas to these groups.
-- Thousands of hours are devoted to city needs by these volunteers.
At a recent appreciation dinner, the many city volunteers were recognized and applauded for the work they do. Some of the volunteers have served for quite a number of years, even though board assignments are rotated to give more residents an opportunity to serve.
Volunteerism is at the core of good citizenship. City residents who care about their city and want to see it grow and prosper tend to be the ones who give up their own time to get involved.
Schools, churches, civic organizations, social agencies and all levels of government are among the many beneficiaries of the volunteer spirit. Without volunteers, for example, how could organizations like the Red Cross or the church down the street survive?
The depth of commitment by those interested in volunteering for a good cause was evident a couple of months ago. In one of its mailings, the city encouraged residents to submit applications for volunteer positions.
More than 200 residents responded.
All of these volunteers deserve the highest praise and the thanks of the entire community for their efforts. Volunteers who give their time to the city are participating in the best of government.
