Cape Girardeau observes a renewed energy in these late days of August. Streets are more crowded, stores and restaurants are more lively and the general pace of life here has picked up. After a summer lull, students are returning to Southeast Missouri State University, where classes begin Monday. We welcome this influx of collegians and celebrate the vibrancy it brings to this community.

Since a school of higher learning was founded here in 1873, the "town and gown" bond has grown robust, with either entity pleased by its association with the other. Cape Girardeau proudly proclaims itself a university town, while Southeast Missouri State boasts of its location in a pleasant community. The two go hand in hand, not always without problems or disagreements, but to the mutual benefit of both.

With the beginning of the fall term and the return of the university's general enrollment, it does the people of Cape Girardeau good to remind themselves of the unique role this community has in shaping the lives of numerous young people. In many cases, students who come to Southeast Missouri State are living away from home for the first time; parents will certainly know the apprehension of entrusting a community with their offspring. Most students are here with the serious purpose of gaining an education and bettering themselves as members of society. While the cliche is certainly in place, few come solely for social reasons or other non-academic pursuits.

Tension between the community and campus will arise in isolated cases as some students make the inevitable mistakes that come with life experiences and some community citizens react with intolerance instead of understanding. Remember, a golden-rule disposition, appropriate manners and a hospitable smile to those you don't know can do a lot to break down generational barriers.

Much is made, rightfully, of the economic impact the university has in Cape Girardeau. It is significant: Southeast Missouri State is among the city's largest employers and attracts a steady population that sustains a considerable support mechanism (food stores, gas stations, clothing shops, restaurants, and so on). Beyond that, the university brings to this community and region a steady diet of academic, cultural, entertainment and sporting activities, enriching all of us, not just the student population.

Southeast Missouri State provides a dynamic aspect to life here as nothing else can. We embrace the return of students to campus and wish them well in their scholarly endeavors.
