It's hard to say goodbye even when it's time for the new to replace the old.

A closing ceremony was held recently for Washington Elementary School, which will close its doors later this month along with May Greene Elementary School. Students at both schools will return to classes in January in the new Blanchard Elementary School.

Washington school served the community well for 88 years. Members of the American Legion Post 63 led the ceremony recently, including the formal lowering of the flag. The flag will be displayed at the new school.

Barbara Blanchard looks at the transition as a new beginning. She attended the school in the 1940s, taught school there beginning in 1961 and served as the principal from 1989 to 1998. As a tribute to her contributions to the district, the new school bears her name.

Similar ceremonies were held at May Greene school last year. The Washington school ceremony provided an opportunity for graduates to share their favorite memories of the school.

As long as these memories remain, Washington and May Greene schools will continue to live in the hearts and minds of Cape Girardeau residents.
