The Home Economics Club was organized in the fall of 1921 for the purpose of learning how to sew or complete other art that members desired to study. The first few months of the club were devoted to making Christmas presents for family, friends or community members in need; the remainder was spent painting and making baskets.
Instead of meetings after school as they are today, several picnics were held at Cape Rock to discuss and plan future events. After several years of sewing, painting, basketry and similar art, the club got involved with the community by participating in charity events on weekends during the school year.
After years of being known as the Home Economic Club, the members voted to change their name to Future Homemakers of America, wanting to keep the same club, just changing the name. In 2000, the national organization voted to rename the club to its current name: Family Career and Community Leaders of America.
As part of our centennial celebration, Pat Johnson, sponsor of FCCLA, and current members would like to invite former FCCLA, FHA and HEC members and sponsors to come home to Central on Jan. 10 for the girls' basketball game against North County High School. Ninth grade tips off at 5 p.m. Former and current members and sponsors will be recognized at halftime of the varsity game.
